” This biggest obstacle to creativity is breaking through the barrier of disbelief.”

– Rodney Mullen

One of the reasons I chose to become an exercise physiologist was to teach myself and others that we can use physical activity for health and wellness and to explore the natural world we live in.  What I have learned in the pursuit of outdoor activities is that we must overcome barriers both physical and mental that we placed upon ourselves. The hardest part about any adventure is taking the first step.  It is this process that opens oneself to a beginners mind and allows us to challenge the mind and the body to sync to the rhythm of movement, to become efficient and patient in the journey.  The skills I have developed and the time dedicated to each pursuit are a fluid system comprised of adaption in an ever changing environment.  I have seen myself transform from standing in an open field as a baseball player, to sleeping on the side of a mountain as a rock climber, to watching the change of scenery as a mountain runner, to effortlessly gliding through fresh snow as a backcountry skier, and finally to feeling the energy of a river under my feet on a paddle board.  Each experience has taught me that we must take chances and trust ourselves with calculated risk based on our experiences we have collected.  We must not fight against nature rather we must find our place within it’s boundless energy and accept successes and defeats with an open mind.  Learn from your mistakes, correct what needs to be corrected and broaden your skills to make the next time more enjoyable and effortless.  This method of trial and error has increased the fun factor and has been the driving force in finding a connection of solace in an ever-changing and fast paced society.
